Caitlyn Connelly ’20, an interactive multimedia major, was the recipient of this year’s Denise Spirito Thesis Grant. Her proposal was selected because of its strong commitment to interdisciplinary in combining elements of graphic design, video production, motion graphics, writing, storyboarding, and set design for her televised puppet show for children.

Shaniqua Dawes ’20, a graphic design major with a minor in creative writing, is also received this year’s Denise Spirito Thesis Grant for her capstone project entitled, “Global Young and Bold.” Based on Planned Parenthood Global’s initiatives, Dawes plans to create a digital campaign that will engage and inform viewers as they increase their understanding for this social campaign.

Chair of the Department of Music Wayne Heisler‘s essay “Are ‘Works’ Enough?” appeared in the most recent volume of the journal The Opera Quarterly, which was devoted to the proceedings of the symposium “Opera and Performance: Taking Stock and Looking Ahead,” hosted by the Department of Culture and Aesthetics at the University of Stockholm, Sweden. Heisler also serves on the Editorial Board and is Reviews Editor for The Opera Quarterly. His forthcoming opera scholarship includes invited participation in the second “YOST: Y/Why Opera/Studies Today” symposium, hosted by Yale University on the theme of opera during the #MeToo era.

Assistant Professor of Communication Studies and Public Health Yachao Li published an article, titled “Users’ Modifications to Electronic Nicotine Delivery Systems (ENDS): Interviews with ENDS Enthusiasts,” in the International Journal of Environmental Research and Public Health (impact factor = 2.468). The paper explored how and why e-cigarette users modified their vaping devices. The results suggested that FDA regulatory actions that limit certain product characteristics may unintentionally increase the likelihood that users will make more extensive modifications to their products.
