Faculty artists share the limelight as TCNJ Art Gallery reopens

After months of closure due to COVID-19 lockdown measures, TCNJ’s Art Gallery finally reopened to the campus community for the 2021 faculty exhibition, which ran until March 15. The exhibition, Envision Us, is still available online and features a diverse collection of art from faculty and staff in the Department of Art and Art History.

To celebrate the return of the in-person exhibitions to TCNJ’s campus, the ArtsComm DIGITAL team has produced a series of videos featuring the artists, the stories behind their work, and what inspires them to teach and create. These videos serve as a supplement to the exhibition, providing background on the exhibition’s theme and allowing the campus community and beyond to learn more about the thriving art culture at the college.

The series gives an exclusive deep-dive into the exhibition and how it came together, including an overview from TCNJ Art Gallery Director Margaret Pezalla-Granlund and individual interviews with a number of the artists. These videos provide behind-the-scenes looks at some of the pieces at the exhibit as the artists take viewers through their creative processes, their personal relationships with their art, and how their art helps to present new ideas and unlock new understandings of the world around them. Viewers also have the chance to take a step into some of the artists’ studios where their creativity takes place.

“The gallery space is essential for these artists,” says Pezalla-Granlund. “They want to see their work in a real space on a wall. They want people to experience it in a physical way and not just on a screen. Many of these works I’ve seen hints of them in progress, and getting to see them in the gallery as fully realized pieces was really exciting.”

The artists featured in this multidisciplinary exhibition reflect the wide range of talents, skills, and backgrounds that make up the faculty, showing off the best of what TCNJ has to offer and the value that they bring to the classroom. Artists like Elizabeth Mackie, professor of fine art and photography/video, and Anita Allyn, professor and coordinator of fine art and photography/video, have displayed their work at galleries around the globe, and others like Jason Alejandro, assistant professor of graphic design, are using their creativity to propel exciting cultural projects outside of the classroom. Together with the student body, these faculty members add vibrancy and life to TCNJ by continually pushing artistic boundaries and unlocking new ideas.
