A Message from TCNJ Theatre Advisory Committee

Dear TCNJ community,

We are deeply saddened and outraged by the senseless death of George Floyd, and so many people of color who went before. We stand together in solidarity with the Black Lives Matter movement and all those seeking to fight racial injustice. While our nation and world grapples with how to seek justice, enact change, heal, and move forward, we recognize that we have to act now.

In the words of the late novelist, Toni Morrison: “This is precisely the time when artists go to work. There is …no need for silence, no room for fear. We speak, we write, we do language. That is how civilizations heal.”

As a theatre community, we realize our responsibility to use our platforms — whether on stage or through a digital venue — to tell honest and authentic stories and promote dialogue. We believe that everyone has a role in the conversation about race and inequality. In order to tackle systemic racism, we must step out of our comfort zones and come together to have these tough conversations. We must listen and learn from each other. We owe it to ourselves, our audiences, and future generations. The time is now for us to get to work.

We pledge to continue promoting inclusiveness and giving a voice to all who have been unheard in our theatre productions. Part of our ongoing planning for the 2020-21 season, includes organizing a fall festival that will celebrate the work and accomplishments of black playwrights, actors, and activities through guest lectures, workshops and theatrical performances. We are in the early stages of that planning, and encourage you to share with us your thoughts about what you would need and like to hear.

Our hope is that the transformative power of the theatre will bring light during this dark time and inspire change.

Stay safe and well,

TCNJ Theatre Advisory Committee
