Fall 2017 Brown Bag Series: “The Many Worlds of Teaching Artistry” presented by Theodore Wiprud – September 29, 2017

Our third Brown Bag Series lecture of the semester, featuring Theodore Wiprud of the New York Philharmonic, spoke to the powerful influence of music and how to translate its impact to young audiences and learners. Mr. Wiprud, the Vice President of Education for the Philharmonic, emphasized the importance of cultural institutions, like teaching artists or concert series, which can reach young people and non-traditional audiences alongside the more common approaches of in-school music programs and extracurricular mentorship. The goal of teaching artists, he explained, is to provide young learners with transformative musical engagement that will hopefully inspire the connection to music that so often leads artists toward their profession. Mr. Wiprud’s advice to anyone hoping to become a music educator is to provide students with the passion and conceptual tools to engage deeply with music to fully appreciate the art and make connections between what they are taught and the music they enjoy in the world outside the classroom.
