The College of New Jersey Welcomes Douglas Rushkoff to Speak on Media, Technology, and Culture

downloadThe College of New Jersey is thrilled to welcome Douglas Rushkoff, author, media theorist, columnist, lecturer, graphic novelist, and documentarian to campus for a public lecture titled Program or Be Programmed: Play, Participation, and Power in a Digital Age on Wednesday, March 19 at 4:00PM in the Mildred and Ernest E. Mayo Concert Hall. This lecture is free and open to the public and sponsored by the Departments of Interactive Multimedia and Communication Studies.

In his lecture, which will appeal to a wide range of academic disciplines, Rushkoff will be examining arguments made in his book, Program or Be Programmed. He will discuss how we continue to accept new technologies into our lives with little or no understanding of how these devices work and work on us. His arguments focus on how our lack of knowledge or interest in technology can be a potentially grave mistake. Rushkoff will also share the biases of digital media, and what that means for how we should use them.

Rushkoff is the author of Present Shock: When Everything Happens Now, as well as a dozen other bestselling books on media, technology, and culture, including Program or Be Programmed, Media Virus, Life Inc and the novel Ecstasy Club. He wrote the graphic novels Testament and A.D.D., and made the PBS Frontline documentaries Merchants of Cool, The Persuaders, and Digital Nation. He is technology and media commentator for CNN, digital literacy advocate for Codecademy.com and has taught and lectured around the world about media, technology, culture and economics.
