The Lyric Theatre Production of Christoph Willibald Gluck’s Opera, Orfeo ed Euridice, on the Main Stage in Kendall Hall from November 1-4, 2012

paintingThe College of New Jersey Center for the Arts joins the Departments of Music and Interactive Multimedia to present the Lyric Theatre Production of Christoph Willibald Gluck’s Opera, Orfeo ed Euridice, on the Main Stage in Kendall Hall from November 1-4, 2012. Based upon on the ancient Greek myth, the musician Orfeo faces the challenges of the underworld to retrieve his wife, Euridice, who dies on their wedding day. The Goddess of Love, Amor, guides Orfeo on his journey and reminds him that he may not look at his wife as he leads her home or she will return to underworld forever. The opera, originally performed in Vienna in 1762, was the first “reform” opera by Gluck and librettist Ranieri de’ Calzabigi who strove for realism and a “noble simplicity” in opera. TCNJ’s production will feature student musicians in the roles of Orfeo, Euridice and Amor as well as in the chorus and orchestra. The opera will be sung in Italian with English supertitles and feature a new virtual set design created by TCNJ Interactive Multimedia faculty Chris Ault and John Kuiphoff and students. Stage direction will be by John Smitherson, technical direction by Dale Simon and music direction by John P. Leonard.
