Strategic Planning and Assessment

The School of the Arts and Communication at The College of New Jersey is committed to an ongoing and continuous cycle of planning and assessment that is mission driven and appropriate to the needs of each program in the school.

Read the mission statement for the School and each of our departments.

In academic year 2013, members of the Strategic Planning and Assessment Committee, in consultation with department chairs, evolved the school-based strategic plan to include more direct input from a larger group of faculty.

In academic year 2014, the ArtsComm Assessment Team worked with colleagues across the school to establish departmentally-based strategic and assessment plans for all of our programs. The team began by establishing learning goal matrices that list learning goals established by Middle States Commission on Higher Education and the learning goals for each major program of study in the school. The matrices indicate which goals are met by each major course in the curriculum.

Using the learning goal matrices as a point of reference, team members worked with colleagues in their respective programs to establish departmental strategic plans that indicate strategies, assessment indicators, cycle/timeframe, and responsibilities for departmental goals in each of the following five areas: curriculum and learning; students and advising; faculty development; administration; and facilities and resources.

In academic year 2015, it will be necessary to monitor the assessments for goals in each department’s strategic plan, working with the responsible parties listed and within the timeframe indicated in the plan, starting with those listed as yearly assessments. It is the task of this team to ensure assessment information is broadly shared and used to improve teaching and learning in a manner consistent with the mission of each department, the school, and the College.
