Dr. John Laughton has been managing university school and colleges, community engaged learning, community economic development projects, and international university programs since the 1970’s. Early in his career he received a Fulbright to work in Brazil to establish a graduate program in music. He was the Dean of Arts and Humanities at St. Mary’s College of Maryland where he established an international arts program called Chesapeake Summer Arts, combining the Tidewater Music Festival, The Maryland Shakespeare Festival, exhibition programs, and educational summer programs for youth working with leading performing artists and organizations in Europe and Latin America. He joined the board of the Fulbright Association in the mid 1980’s and was a board member of the J. William and Harriet Fulbright Center. He has worked with international programming in China as a member of the first group of United States Educators to enter China after June 4, 1989. For two years he was the executive director of the California State University Summer Arts program where he worked with the 21 universities of the system to bring international visual and performing artists to the United States and to develop classes and educational programming that focused on community engaged learning. He was Dean of the College of Visual and Performing Arts at the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth for seven years, where he managed construction projects focusing on the arts and community economic development in downtown New Bedford, Massachusetts. He has been a participant in international panels and competitions in Russia, Georgia, and Brazil. He is a trained mediator having trained with Mediation Works Inc. in Boston and as a negotiator, with the Program on Negotiation at Harvard. As a performer he has been broadcast nationally and internationally. He holds a doctorate in music from the University of Iowa.
